In Vitro Fertilization literally means ?fertilization in glass?, hence the familiar name of ?test tube baby?. Eggs are removed from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory dish before being placed in the woman?s womb. Women who use In Vitro Fertilization are often recommended this method when others have failed or because they are older.

Although techniques for In Vitro Fertilization vary, a normal method of IVF would go something like this. At the start of your treatment your doctor gives you drugs to block the hormones your pituitary gland usually produces during your monthly cycle. Blocking the hormones helps the doctor have greater control over your egg production. Once this has been done further drugs are given to multiply the number of eggs your ovaries produce.

Vaginal ultrasound scans are carried out to monitor your developing eggs along with blood tests to chart the rising levels of estrogen produced by the eggs. As soon as the tests show that the time is right, you will have another injection of a different hormone to help your eggs mature. The eggs are collected between 34 and 38 hours after the injection is given so the timing for it is crucial. Eggs are usually collected by ultrasound guidance which takes around 30 minutes and you are either given a drug to make you drowsy or a general anesthetic.

It is now the male?s job to ensure that a fresh sperm sample is ready. Once this has been done the sperm are stored for a short period before they are washed and then spun at high speed to ensure only the healthiest ad most active sperm are used. Sperm which has been donated is kept in a freezer but the same method for preparation is used. Your eggs are then mixed with your partner?s sperm and left in a laboratory dish for 16-20 hours before they are checked to see if any have fertilized. Any embryo?s that have fertilized abnormally or not at all, are discarded, then those remaining are left for another 24 to 48 hours prior to a final check.

Two days after your eggs have been collected; you are given an injection, gel or pessaries to help prepare the lining of your womb.
