Test tube babies, as they are commonly known, are created using IVF or In Vitro Fertilization which literally means fertilization in glass. Eggs are removed from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory dish before being placed in the woman?s womb. In Vitro Fertilization may be recommended for a number of reasons including; age, other techniques have failed, the woman?s tubes are blocked or the infertility cannot be explained.
Whilst every clinic works slightly differently, the main procedure is a fairly routine one. At the start of your treatment your doctor gives you drugs to block the hormones your pituitary gland usually produces during your monthly cycle. This allows them better control over when your eggs are produced. To ensure you ovaries produce more than a single egg, further drugs are given.

Vaginal ultrasound scans are carried out to monitor your developing eggs along with blood tests to chart the rising levels of estrogen produced by the eggs. To help the eggs mature a different hormone will be injected once all the tests say the time is right. This injection is given 34 to 38 hours before the eggs will be collected to the timing of this is very important. Ultrasound guidance is used to help collect the egg but it means you have to be given drugs or a general anesthetic to help you relax because it takes about 30 minutes.
It is now the male?s job to ensure that a fresh sperm sample is ready. To make sure that the best sperm are used for the process, the sample is washed and then spun at high speed, this will give the healthiest and the most active sperm. If you are using donated sperm, the sample is taken from the freezer and prepared in the same way. Once that has been completed the sperm is mixed with the eggs in a dish and left for between 16 to 20 hours and then checked to see if they have been fertilized. Only those embryos that have fertilized successfully are kept and left for a further day to two days before a final inspection.
The womb needs to be ready to accept the fertilized egg so a gel, injection or pessaries are given to ensure the lining of the womb is prepared.
