In Vitro fertilization is the proper medical name for what the press dubbed ?test tube babies? many years ago. The woman?s eggs are taken from her ovaries and then in a laboratory dish, fertilized with sperm before being inserted into her womb. In Vitro Fertilization may be recommended for a number of reasons including; age, other techniques have failed, the woman?s tubes are blocked or the infertility cannot be explained.

Whilst every clinic works slightly differently, the main procedure is a fairly routine one. The first thing your doctor will do is to stop the hormones released by the pituitary gland during your period by the use of other drugs. The reason for this is so the physician has improved control over when your eggs are produced. You then take different drugs to make your ovaries produce more than one egg.

Vaginal ultrasound scans are carried out to monitor your developing eggs along with blood tests to chart the rising levels of estrogen produced by the eggs. To help the eggs mature a different hormone will be injected once all the tests say the time is right. The reason for this is that the eggs will be collected between 34 and 38 hours later, even if it is the middle of the night. When it is time to collect the eggs, you may be given a general anesthetic or drugs to make you feel drowsy as they are collected by ultrasound guidance and it takes about 30 minutes.

It?s about this time that the man must produce some fresh sperm. After a short storage period the sperm are washed and spun at high speed to enable the most active and healthiest to be chosen. With donated sperm, the process is the same but the sample is taken from the freezer. Your eggs are then mixed with your partner?s sperm and left in a laboratory dish for 16-20 hours before they are checked to see if any have fertilized. During the next stage, only successfully fertilized embryos are kept and left for a further 24 to 48 hours before a final check is done.

The womb needs to be ready to accept the fertilized egg so a gel, injection or pessaries are given to ensure the lining of the womb is prepared.
