In Vitro fertilization is the proper medical name for what the press dubbed ?test tube babies? many years ago. The woman?s eggs are taken from her ovaries and then in a laboratory dish, fertilized with sperm before being inserted into her womb. In Vitro Fertilization is recommended if you are an older woman, have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility, those whose tubes are blocked, or if other techniques have been unsuccessful.

Methods of IVF will invariably differ a little from clinic to clinic but should proceed along these lines. At first your physician will halt the release of hormones that are produced during your monthly cycle by giving you some drugs. The reason for this is to assist control over when the eggs are ready. After this your ovaries are stimulated by drugs to create more than one egg.

It?s important that levels of estrogen produced by the eggs are monitored so a combination of blood tests and vaginal ultrasound scans are used. Another hormone injection will be given when the tests show the time is right to help the eggs mature. The eggs are collected between 34 and 38 hours after the injection is given so the timing for it is crucial. Collecting the eggs takes about 30 minutes and is carried out using ultrasound guidance so often either drugs or a general anesthetic is given to make you feel more relaxed.

Around the time the woman?s eggs are collected, the male produces a fresh sample of sperm. Once this has been done the sperm are stored for a short period before they are washed and then spun at high speed to ensure only the healthiest ad most active sperm are used. If you are using donated sperm, the sample is taken from the freezer and prepared in the same way. The process then continues with the eggs and sperm left for 16 to 20 hours in a laboratory dish to mix and after that period, checked to see if they have fertilized. During the next stage, only successfully fertilized embryos are kept and left for a further 24 to 48 hours before a final check is done.

Two days after your eggs have been collected; you are given an injection, gel or pessaries to help prepare the lining of your womb.
