Botox is derived from Botulinum toxin, discovered nearly five decades ago and was tested for use as a treatment for disorders of the mind. In 1989 Botox was finally approved by the FDA to treat eye muscle disorders like blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), strabismus (crossed eyes) and even wrinkles.

When Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses which results in the weakening of the muscles that cause frowning and eventually over a period of several months, given enough of these injections, the frown lines start to soften. The lines will to the casual observer, disappear but the same process can now be used on laughter lines around the eyes and forehead lines as well.

To allay any fears about injection toxin into our bodies; these injections only contain a diluted and purified version of the poison that can make us very sick. The popularity of botox is due to the fact that we all have wrinkles and lines when we smile, laugh and make other facial gestures which are the result of muscles in the face.

Many cosmetic manufacturers have tried to create creams to eliminate the creases and lines that are formed on our faces after years of wear and tear but botox is the only treatment to date that can actually rid them from us. A person who has undergone this treatment still has enough movement to provide some expressions but they are limited and because most of the wrinkles and creases have all but disappeared, it appears that the person is younger than their true years. The obvious downside to this treatment is the cost and that is why it has been coined as something only celebrities have carried out as the least expensive injection can still cost upwards of 300 dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars.

The side-effects of regular botox use may take some time to appear as it is only a recent addition to the cosmetic surgeon?s armory but for now, its use does not seem to be diminishing.
