Can Botox Shots Be Given In The Feet

For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox as the treatment of choice but a great many people do not know exactly what it is. In order to appreciate just what botox is we need a brief history lesson into its discovery, quite a while ago now.

Used originally for disorders of the brain, botox was first studied back in the early 1960?s and derived from the now famous poison Botulinum toxin. For patients suffering with uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes, a treatment finally came in 1989 when the FDA granted approval for botox to be used on these patients and also for wrinkles.

More research was carried out into other medical uses and in 2000 it was allowed to be used on patients that had serious contractions in their shoulders and neck, easing the pain and contractions; it as also given the ok to be used on another more unusual eye condition. In all the research that was going on with botox, doctors had found that it was effective at reducing frown lines around the eyebrow area and following this the FDA finally recognized the implications and agreed its commercial use in 2002.

You see botox is a neuro toxin, meaning it paralyses the muscles it is injected into and makes them relax so frown lines will gradually soften and subside if sufficient treatments are given. If this procedure is continued, in many instances the lines will soften so much they will appear to disappear and now the same procedure is used on other areas of the face where lines form, generally with age.

Botox injections themselves are actually a diluted form of botulism; the same botulism that can make us very ill but botox use in cosmetic surgery is a purified form the Botulinum toxin. The reason people want to use botox injections is because every time you laugh, smile, frown, or for that matter do just about anything with your facial muscles, wrinkles are caused by the underlying contractions of these muscles.

When we are young and our skin is more elastic, these lines do not show but as we age the constant sue of facial muscles leaves us with lines and whilst many manufacturers have tried to produce creams that can get rid of these wrinkles and creases, unsuccessfully, botox can, at least for a short period. These injections are used directly into the muscles that control facial expressions, paralyzing them for a short period effectively making it almost impossible for someone to smile for example but the fact that facial expressions are reduced can give the effect of a doll like appearance.

People still have enough movement to look fairly normal but not enough to cause these wrinkles; so in fact by taking these Botox injections they make you look younger. Botox treatment is expensive with the average cost of just one Botox injection in the United States ranging from a few hundred dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars depending on where the injection is used.

As a recent form of cosmetic enhancement it may be some time before the full facts about long term botox use will be known but for now, most people really aren?t that concerned.
