When using credit cards online, it is always useful to know a few of the basics. Accepting credit cards is important if you are running an internet business. However, many businesses that only have small sites find the problem is that people won?t buy from them if the site isn?t secure. When you accept credit cards online, you have to make sure your site is secure, and that potential customers feel safe when considering a purchase through your site.

You may notice some sites you visit have Verisign, which indicates that they have a secure system to accept credit cards online. It is easier to give out your details when you know this although no system is completely secure. Potential customers need this reassurance if you want them to buy from you.

If you shop online, don?t forget this. When shopping online, some sites are safer than others when using credit cards. The verisign logo helps and it is a good place to start but it is not the only thing you should look for. All web addresses start with http://, but when you are on a secure site, it should instead be: https://. The ?s? means that the site you are on is secure.

However, there are a number of sites to be wary of because their sole intention is to get your credit card information. Phishing sites as they are now called trick more people than you think. You should be wary of emails that require you to follow a link to update your credit card or bank details. So when you follow the link it takes the user to what appears to be an official looking site but is a complete fake. Once you enter your credit card or bank information, criminals can access your account at any time.

The easiest way around this type of scam is to enter the website address in manually. So, as a get around, start up a new browser window and enter the web address in manually as you remember it. You can be safe in the knowledge that you will almost never be requested to confirm confidential information from an email. If there is a problem, they will call you. Look on the company?s real website for a phone number to make sure. A legitimate site will completely understand your hesitancy to divulge credit card details and answer any questions.
